Day 15; Mont Saint Eloi to Arras

Vous êtes ici!

We have arrived in Arras this afternoon.

A short day today
One final early morning photo to start the last leg of our 260km “walk” from Canterbury to Arras. We are just leaving the Chambre where we stayed last night
The first marker to get us going is just at the end of the street. It appears that one of the Camino de Santiago routes joined the Via Francigena a few days ago. We noticed the blue and yellow scallop shell symbols at least 2 days ago.
The path ahead
Another small shrine beside the channel/stream from a fish hatchery, keeping the little trout safe?
Another old mill converted into someone’s house
On the outskirts of town some beautifully restored buildings. This one seemed particularly “happy” and reminded me of a tin of French Chocolates that we bought on our last trip to France.
Ok! Now we’re clearly on the right path. Bronze markers for the via Francigena embedded in the concrete sidewalk leading us to the city centre
The streets start to narrow as we get closer to the centre of the old city
The main city square with very distinctive Flemish architectureo. The buildings surrounding it; Cafes, restaurants, and all sorts of shops all around it
The narrow lane leading up to our apartment, “second door on the left”
An interesting “curiosity” just around the corner. According to Google Maps, this was the main entrance to the underground tunnels used by the New Zealand army during the battle of Arras during WW1. Now bricked over and sealed with a steel door.
We check in to the apartment, drop our packs, and went looking for the nearest big grocery store. Yeah! Apparently Champagne, REAL champagne from champagne, is a grocery staple here.
Back at he apartment with “groceries” in hand to celebrate the end of another chapter of the continuing adventures, “Walking In Europe, Episode 2025”
The empreintesfrom our pilgrim’s passport
The stamps for the last 2 days with the Arras Tourist office, the last one for this trip, on the right.
